An Urgent Problem

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the South African economy. The most economically vulnerable South African households will be the hardest hit by the shrinking economy. The unemployment rate is expected to surge and many will be left with no alternative, but to default on school fees payments – school dropout rates are likely to climb as a result. Interruptions in learning can have far-reaching effects for children – especially for the most economically vulnerable consumers – creating a gap in education that will be hard to fill in the future.

The COVID-19 Relief Project

The Ignite Education Fund and SPARK Schools have partnered together to ensure that SPARK Schools families who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic have the opportunity to continue receiving the benefits of quality private education for their children. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to high-quality education will become an even bigger challenge for these families as breadwinners face retrenchments, salary cuts and lost income in their own businesses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is critical to assist these families who are without a financial safety net as they will likely be unable to pay school fees during these uncertain times.

Assistance provided to families will include:

• Financial support to aid in the payment of fees
• Provision of educational tools and materials to families during the national lockdown to avoid students falling behind on their studies
• Academic, social-emotional and community support by SPARK employees to help by preventing lowered school attendance or attrition.

Criteria to be considered for Funding;

  • Must be a SPARK Schools parent in need of financial assistance because of COVID-19.
  • School fees must be paid up until April 2020.
  • Proof that your finances have been severely impacted by COVID-19 (supporting documents will be required).
